Back Bend

The Sanskrit word “Yoga” means “to join together or unite.”

Yoga teaches us how to unite our body, mind and spirit and return to the wholeness that is our true nature. Over thousands of years, the science of yoga has proven itself an effective way to cultivate physical health, develop concentration, experience peace of mind, and realize our oneness in Spirit.

Swami Kripalu

Kripalu Yoga is a contemporary approach to spiritual practice inspired by the life and teachings of Swami Kripalu (1913-1981). Renowned in India for his love of God, service to humanity and mastery of yoga, this modern-day saint was an accomplished scholar and musician who maintained a schedule of 10 hours of meditation a day for thirty years. His teachings flowed from a tremendous depth of spiritual experience. Swami Kripalu came to the U.S. from 1977-1981, teaching his close disciple, Yogi Amrit Desai, and his students, and was directly involved in the development of Kripalu Yoga.

Kripalu Yoga uses a three-stage approach, honoring your body’s needs in each moment:

  1. Body and Breath Awareness is where we begin. Students learn how to practice the classic postures of hatha yoga with relaxation, deep breathing and proper alignment. This strengthens the body and releases chronic tension. An attitude of compassionate self-acceptance is an essential element of the practice.
  2. Holding the Posture guides you to focus your attention on inner sensations, thoughts and emotions, as you learn to hold postures for longer periods of time while cultivating an ability to witness all that arises.
  3. Meditation-in-Motion is a unique and personal expression of Kripalu Yoga. As practice deepens and the intelligent life force of the body (prana) grows stronger, energy flows freely and you begin to move spontaneously in response.
